Hawaiian petroglyphs is a form of ancient rock carving created by the Native Hawaiians, known as kī‘i pōhaku in Hawaiian, which literally means "stone images." These petroglyphs were carved into lava rock surfaces using stone tools, and they are found throughout the Hawaiian Islands, especially on the Big Island (Hawai‘i), in places like Pu‘u Loa in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.
It can consist of many different types of images representative of nature, human and animal figures, while others include geometrical shapes and patterns or what appear to be early systems of writing.
